... and other fashion news you missed, including BTS’s new fashion gigs and Kim Kardashian’s conjuring of Princess Diana
This wasn’t the first time that Daniel Arsham’s work surfaced at Paris Fashion Week – the artist famously collaborated on Kim Jones’ SS20 collection for Dior – but it was his first standalone show. The third chapter in his Objects IV Life imprint, the collection compounded Arsham’s fascination with decay and collapse: a creative locus that stems from finding his childhood home flattened by Hurricane Andrew when he was 12 years old. In a moment of runway ASMR, the artist himself broke open plaster-cast sculptures to reveal a series of denim pieces beneath them, with models caked in their chalky detritus. Elsewhere, chore jackets, mossy knits, powder-blue puffer jackets, and steel-capped boots riffed on the workwear staples beloved of artists – splattered in paint and studio debris. Arsham’s obsession with destruction, then, became an act of creation. Click through the gallery above to see the rest of Objects IV Life Ch. 003.
In other news this week, André Leon Talley’s estate announced an archive auction and the AW23 menswear edition of Milan Fashion Week came to a close – with Prada, JW Anderson, Charles Jeffrey, and DSquared2’s high-octane redux of its 2003 archive all worth a revisit, not to mention all the pillows. As for Paris Fashion Week, which is still ongoing, Louis Vuitton’s show was basically a massive Rosalía concert, Bianca Saunders rolled back the tape on a Jamaican classic, Gabriel from Emily in Paris went (American) psycho on Louis-Gabriel Nouchi’s catwalk, Rick Owens went “sleazy”, and Junya Watanabe debuted a slew of major collaborations. KIM KARDASHIAN’S STAKES CLAIM ON PRINCESS DIANA
There is no soul – nor historical figure – that Kim Kardashian will not inhabit. Having assumed Marilyn Monroe at the Met Gala, she just bought an heirloom necklace once belonging to Princess Diana. It’s no coincidence that she made this purchase when Harry and Meghan are having such a moment in the press – yet again, Kim is using fashion to participate in media sensationalism, claiming proximity to other icons.
VALENTINO’S SWEET TOOTH
This week, Suga from BTS was revealed as the new global ambassador for Valentino. The musician will be appointed to the maison’s Di.Va (which stands for different values) line-up because he is “a multifaceted artist; he is an interpreter and uses his talent and his work to express himself with energy and authenticity,” as Pierpaolo Piccioli said. Elsewhere, another BTS member – Jimin – landed a similar contract with Dior, where he will join BLACKPINK’s Jisoo as global ambassador.
HOWL’S MOVING POP-UP SHOP
Loewe just revealed its third and final collaborative capsule with Studio Ghibli, this time drawing inspiration from Howl’s Moving Castle. The scope of the collection has yet to be unveiled but it will arrive at the Selfridges Corner Shop on February 1, 24 hours before general release. Running until February 25, the department store will host a remake of Calcifer’s Kitchen, cinema screenings of the film, a window takeover, and an exhibition showcasing original sketches by Studio Ghibli.
BODE LAUNCHES WOMENSWEAR
In news that will thrill the New York fashion set – who love to dress up as tablecloths and antique napkins – Bode will be launching a womenswear imprint. The new offshoot will debut tomorrow (January 21) at Paris Fashion Week alongside its usual menswear collection, so stay tuned for more on that.
NIKE COLLABS WITH CORTEIZ
Broadcast via a massive bat signal projection across Oxford Street, London’s streetwear label Corteiz will be launching its first collaboration with Nike. Though the brand has previously worked with Yacht Club, Motherlan, Central Cee, and Meekz, this collaboration marks Corteiz’s biggest moment yet. For now, details on the actual offering remain scant, but the collection is set to launch in the coming months.
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE NOVA CHECK
Daniel Lee’s debut at Burberry will be unveiled a month today, but in the meantime, the designer’s decided to make his mark a little early – covering huge swathes of grassland with the brand’s Nova Check motif. Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada painted an enormous meadow in the Canary Islands with milk-based paint, while a field in Western Cape in South Africa was hand-planted by expert local green teams. The whole thing pays homage to women explorers Elsie Burberry (who voyaged to the Canary Islands) and Betty Kirby-Green (who co-piloted The Burberry plane from London to Cape Town in 1937).
