They walked to the retro thrumming of superhero show theme tunes, with the runway itself divided by graphic pillars like the pages of a comic book. One of fashion’s most successful ongoing collaborations, Y-3 – the work of celebrated Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto and sportswear giant adidas – has been going for over a decade. With Yeezy in the front row, AW14 proved that despite the label’s longevity, it shows no sign of slowing down. Y-3’s superpower? Seamlessly combining two distinctive aesthetics – Yamamoto’s avant-garde silhouettes and adidas’s signature sportswear and stripes. To celebrate the first birthday of Y-3’s store on Covent Garden’s Floral Street, the brand teamed up with Dazed on a shoot that showcases the best of the collection – with all the items now available in the store. Styled by contributor Adam Winder and photographed by Ash Kingston, it features Y-3 runway star Sam Maouchi and Select’s Beth Donaghy in caped kagools and black tailoring barred with orange stripes. One piece, a track top in yellow (a slightly darker take on the comic book primary colour) channels Beatrix Kiddo, the heroine of Kill Bill, whist high-tech stacked sneakers show that Y-3's superheroes have ditched the coloured tights for slick urban streetwear. Entries to the competition have now closed.
