Founded by 28-year-old Annie Lian, the self-titled fashion label places an emphasis on sustainability and personal identity. With stints at FIT and Central Saint Martins, Lian herself is skilled in everything from screen-printing to hand-painting, which explains the dimensional nature of her designs. The multidisciplinary creative’s work, which she describes as “wearable art”, often involves upcycling and textile experimentation, resulting in other-worldly pieces that blur the line between fashion and art. Along with eco-conscious design, Lian’s emerging brand is deeply rooted in both community and individuality, and is inspired by both the DIY scene and the urban culture Lian herself is surrounded by. As an independent designer, Lian is no stranger to curating her own aesthetic. Now, she’s teamed up with Nike for the brand’s latest Airmax campaign in collaboration with Dazed Studio, which placed an emphasis on personal style. Following her recent collaboration with the sportswear brand, we caught up with Lian to find what’s inspiring her, how she styles her Nike Air Maxes, and more. Photography Nina Gofur How would you describe your personal style in 3 words? Experimental, subversive, ethereal. What’s your first fashion-related memory? My first fashion-related memory was growing up on platforms like WeeWorld, Zwinky, and Polyvore, where I would customise avatars and build outfit boards in a digital world. It was my first fashion playground, where I could style myself in anything I imagined. Your alarm just went off, and you have 10 minutes to get ready. What’s the first item in your wardrobe you’re reaching for? My hat and Dior sunglasses. What’s your favourite way to style your Nike Air Maxes? With a mini skirt, a cute belt, a fitted tank, and sunglasses. What are some unexpected sources of inspiration for you these days? I’m constantly inspired by the places I visit, the people I surround myself with, the environments I’m in, and the art I consume. With the current never-ending trend cycle and rapidly changing algorithm, how do you stay true to your own taste? By making my own wardrobe, up-cycling pieces, and focusing on what genuinely makes me feel good. If your friends were asked what you are currently “maxxing” out on, what do you think they’d say? Always creating, always working on new projects, and constantly on the go – staying inspired. Escape the algorithm!
