The artist’s journey started at age 5, when she first joined the Washington Ballet. These days, though, she’s better known for her work as a singer, songwriter and producer, with performances at The Mercury Lounge and Songbyrd Music House already under her belt. Blending pop, trip-hop and R&B, Ruth’s sound is genre-defying and heartfelt – which you’ll hear in her latest single, “Priceless”. Rather than finding her way in the industry, Ruth is creating her own lane. An entrepreneur as well as an up-and-coming artist, the 26-year-old founded the independent record label Global Crisis as a way to build a more equitable future for the industry. Now that her musical output has already captured fans’ attention, the artist is trying her hand at fashion, too, appearing in Nike’s Spring Airmax campaign, which was produced in collaboration with Dazed Studio. Ahead of the artist’s Nike shoot, we caught up on what she’s “maxxing out” on, her dream sneaker and speaking to strangers. Photography Nina Gofur How would you describe your personal style in 3 words? Citygirl, sporty, cosy. What’s your first fashion-related memory? In high school, I won best dressed in the yearbook two years in a row. I feel like this established me as a certified fashion girly before that was even a widely-used internet term. Your alarm just went off and you have 10 minutes to get ready. What’s the first item in your wardrobe you’re reaching for? Definitely a jersey. I love the comfort and effortlessness that comes with throwing on a sports jersey; they’re breathable, lightweight, and easy to move around in. What’s your favourite way to style your Nike Air Maxes? I love pairing Air Maxes with a skirt, something jean or tulle, and a corset, or some type of mesh top. I love urban style, and pairing sneakers with a girly fit feels so Concrete Princess-coded. What are some unexpected sources of inspiration for you these days? Conversations with strangers. With the current never-ending trend cycle and rapidly changing algorithm, how do you stay true to your own taste? I’ve always had a strong sense of style, and I’m naturally drawn to pieces that feel weird or outside the box – things that exist beyond the algorithm altogether. I think I have a way of seeing past what’s being marketed to me, so I go out of my way to find clothing that genuinely resonates with me at my core. Escape the algorithm!
