Before we even knew of the existence of Lux – the singer’s monumental fourth album – she was covertly breadcrumbing its themes through her saintly fashion choices. She appeared at last year’s Met Gala in a white sculpted gown from Balmain that looked like a Greek statue, and preceded that with a pre-Met pap walk wearing voluminous white skirts. In September, she wore a crinkled white gown and black headscarf – similar to that of a nun’s habit – to Calvin Klein’s SS26 show, which was followed by a slew of all-white outfits across fashion month. And in October, after Lux was officially announced, she bleached a bright white halo into her dark brown hair. When Lux dropped in November, all was revealed. The album was inspired by the lives of Christian saints like Joan of Arc, Saint Lucy and Teresa of Ávila, with the singer using fashion as a tool to communicate her message. And in this specific era of fandom – where arriving at your favourite artist’s concert in a themed outfit is basically law – Rosalía’s own fans are starting to resemble religious acolytes more than any other. This week in Barcelona, at the singer’s homecoming concerts, fans flocked to the Palau Sant Jordi arena in soft silk camis, flowing tiered maxi dresses and shrouded in lace veils (all in white, of course). White habits like the one Rosalía wears on the Lux album cover were also popular, as were white feathers, white faux fur and frilly corset tops. For those who didn’t want to go down the monochromatic route, accessories were the best bet: rosaries and crucifixes were slung around necks, lace scarves wrapped around waists, and one guy even made his own makeshift “Berghain” sunglasses, in honour of the heartpounding lead single.
