Mullets, space buns, and pink pixies: the Grammys 2021 beauty moments

Someone else who had a great Grammys was Megan Thee Stallion– the rapper took home three awards, and also received a shoutout from Billie Eilish who dedicated her Record of the Year win to hot girl Meg. On the red carpet, Megan’s beauty was straight up glamorous. Hairstylist Kellon Deryck created a classic updo with softly waved tendrils framing her face. On make-up was Priscilla Ono who gave Meg a soft glam look with 90s-inspired brown lip liner, glossy lips, black eyeliner, and plenty of highlight. 

Celebs going through multiple outfit changes at award shows is just expected at this point, but Billie Eilish took it to the next level this year by switching up her nails as well. With her ever present slime green roots intact (a welcome constant in a sea of uncertainty), Eilish rocked square-tipped, neutral nails which she paired with a patterned head scarf in a video with brother Finneas to accept the award for “Song Written for Visual Media.” On the red carpet, Eilish matched her manicure to her Gucci tattoo-print outfit courtesy of nail artist Tammy Taylor, while during her performance for “everything i wanted,” her nails were a deep forest green to complement her bejewelled (also Gucci) ensemble.

For Lizzo’s second outfit of the night, she wore a pearlescent pink Balmain gown which she accessorised with a matching shimmering, pale pink manicure and, most memorably, three gigantic pink rhinestone hair clips. Holding her cascading waist-length hair in place, the clips added a bit of camp and drama to the prom-inspired look and came courtesy of hair stylist Shelby Swain who bought the clips that morning from the Slauson Super Mall. “I love creating an experience and making a statement,” Swain told Vogue. “I love to mix total glam and high fashion, with a little bit of LA to it, too.” 

Keeping the mullet trend alive, Doja Cat walked the red carpet with a soft, shaggy version of the style. The look was done by hairstylist Jared Henderson who gave the singer long, wispy layers at the back, with a choppy baby fringe at the front using Joico products to dye and style the wig. Adding to the rock and roll chic, was a smoky, grungy make-up look courtesy of Ernesto Casillas. The dramatic eye make-up stretched out towards her temples and was completed with smudgy black eyeliner, complementing her showgirl-meets-motocross Roberto Cavalli gown.

Haim turned up to the Grammy’s head to toe in matching Prada lavender swiped straight from the runway of Miuccia and Raf’s SS21 show. But it wasn’t just the clothes that came from the collection – a hitchhiker in the form of the blunt, grown-out, “disconnected” bangs that we saw on the Prada models also made its way onto the heads of the Haim girls. Stylist Bryce Scarlett was responsible for these bangs which was giving retro-futuristic alien who potentially had a mishap with some scissors. It’s not a look I’ll personally be bringing with me to the hairdressers but to each their own.

The men of the Grammys largely let the side down when it came to beauty – although Harry Styles did rock multiple fuzzy feather boas in lilac and pale green courtesy of Gucci. The exception was Bad Bunny who performed his song “Dákiti” with three little space buns placed around his head. The Puerto Rican reggaeton star paired these space buns with a metallic mesh top, a chainmail vest, and silver trousers, an outfit change from the ankle-length Burberry kilt he wore on the red carpet.

The music video for “WAP” was full of fantastic beauty looks and for the live performance of the hit single, Cardi B did not disappoint. Giving us similar vibes to the Cindy Lou Who heart braids she rocked last year, Cardi appeared on stage with a candyland pink pixie cut. The look was created by her longtime hairstylist Tokyo Stylez who dyed the custom-designed wig using Joico’s Color Intensity dye in Rose Gold. The short cut was chosen, Stylez said, in order to let the futuristic Barbarella costume really shine. On make-up was Erika La'Pearl who created a full Pat McGrath look with glittery rosy shadows from the Mothership 5 Bronze Seduction Palette.

To pick up two awards, including Song of the Year for “I Can’t Breathe,” Singer H.E.R. gave us 70s rock goddess with long waves that flowed past her waist which she paired with a sumptuous velvet Dundas dress and round purple glasses. The enviable hair came courtesy of Nina Monqiue while Marissa Vossen was on make-up, creating a iridescent gold and purple eye look with chocolatey terracotta lips.
