Last year, Megan Thee Stallion spoke out about the release of “WAP”, saying that the sex-positive song with Cardi B “freaks men the hell out” because it reminds them that they don’t own sex. In a new interview, she goes one step further, saying that it feels like it’s her job to make men “uncomfortable”.
Speaking to the DJ (and Dazed 100 alum) Julie Adenuga for the Evening Standard, the Good News rapper particularly notes that her perception of men has changed as she’s grown more successful. “I’m starting to see how much more ignorant men are than I thought,” she says. “When you’re a woman who’s not a threat, men don’t really bother you.”
“Then as you grow into your own and as you become somebody who doesn’t need a man or somebody who is so independent… men like that damsel in distress type of role and that’s not me.”
Echoing the (mostly male) critiques of her persona and lyrics — we’re looking at you, Ben Shapiro and Russell Brand — she adds: “I feel like that’s what kind of gets under a lot of men’s skin. Like, ‘How dare she talk about her vagina? She loves herself and she don’t need me and she’s going to take my money.’ I just feel like I make a lot of them uncomfortable and I feel like that’s my job.”
Noting that she’s not a “normal woman” or even a “normal person” — read: she has a Beyoncé collab — Megan goes on: “If my un-normalness offends you, well, I’m obviously doing something right and, baby, look the other way.”
“I’m not even mad at these men. They’re emotionally ignorant. Once they come to grips with who they are, maybe they’ll grow up.”
Last month, Megan Thee Stallion hinted at a follow-up to “WAP” on its one year anniversary, and released a remixed version of BTS’ “Butter”, following a legal fight with her record label. She’s also set to feature on the tracklist for Lil Nas X’s upcoming debut album, Montero.
