Music’s in the blood for firebrand DJ Julie Adenuga, your one-stop guide to what’s popping on the underground
Between spinning the decks on Apple’s Beats 1 radio show and posting selfies with up-and-comers like Young M.A, radio DJ and all-round firebrand Julie Adenuga is single-handedly redefining the UK music scene as millions tune in to her show to hear what’s poppin’ off. Her connection to the music isn’t just fan service, either – it’s a family affair. Adenuga watched as older brothers Junior and Jamie (Skepta and JME) launched their own label, Boy Better Know, and, not content to sit back as they detonated on the grime scene, slid behind the mic as a self-starter, landing her debut on Rinse FM in the station’s pirate days.
Her success is undoubtedly down to her own tenacity, although Adenuga has taken inspiration from JME, whose ability not to “concern himself with unnecessary things” she admires. Now she is one of three presenters heading up Beats 1, Apple’s 24-hour radio streaming channel, alongside Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden.
