Besides the football hooligan chorus chant, a huge draw of the song was its slick and stylish music video, directed by Gordon von Steiner. In the video, Sivan and von Steiner dramatically established the new era’s visual language, so much so that we unpacked all the video’s references here, from the Wolfgang Tillmans-inspired portraiture to the broquette-coded archive fashion pulls. Videos for “Got Me Started” and “One of Your Girls” soon followed, both building on an aesthetic universe with homoerotic fashion at its core. After the release of Something To Give Each Other, and the announcement of an accompanying world tour, Sivan and his creative team were tasked with translating the visual identity of the music videos into an IRL, on-stage experience – so what best way to do this? Living out a little gay boy’s fashion fantasy of course! Paying homage to Madonna’s 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, Sivan and stylist Marc Forne tapped Jean Paul Gaultier for a recreation of the star’s iconic cone bra, as well as heading over to Helmut Lang for a re-edition of tank tops from its SS03 show. Elsewhere, Sivan’s Prada ambassadorship was put to good use with the singer appearing in a sheer white suit for one of the more serene moments, while DSquared2’s sleazy, Y2K wares also made several appearances. As well as these, though, Sivan also tapped a number of younger labels that have only just made their way into the homosexual canon, like JordanLuca, av vattev, and Ludovic de Saint Sernin.
