Your fave celebs get in the spooky mood
Halloween is officially over, which means it’s time to hook yourself into the mainframe and stalk your favourite (and least favourite) celebs for their spooky season looks.
For celebrities, Halloween is, above all, a prime time to make good content and reign in those Insta likes. As Halloween grows in popularity each year, so do the costumes. Although most people will have spent the evening trying to fish their neon cat eye contact lenses out, or accidentally spilling fake blood over their parents’ carpet, those with an army of glam squad agents continue to serve fierce looks.
Transforming themselves beyond recognition – or just looking to themselves for inspiration – this year saw Normani become Noami, Kim Kardashian embrace her criminal law training as Legally Blonde, and Greta Thunberg dress as the scariest thing to angry climate crisis deniers: herself.
Time to peel off those fake eyelashes – you definitely slept in them – and revel in this year’s best Halloween looks.
GRETA THUNBERG AS HERSELF
So today is Halloween. I don’t celebrate it back home, but I thought I might give it a try.
— Greta Thunberg (@GretaThunberg) November 1, 2019
And apparently when it comes to scaring a bunch of angry climate crisis deniers - I don’t even have to dress up!! #trickortreatpic.twitter.com/Nt6CHRU3Q8
Right-wing figures are absolutely terrified of Greta Thunberg, so it makes perfect sense that the climate activist would go as herself for Halloween. Posting on Twitter, the 16-year-old wrote: “So today is Halloween. I don’t celebrate it back home, but I thought I might give it a try. And apparently when it comes to scaring a bunch of angry climate crisis deniers – I don’t even have to dress up!!” This isn’t the first time Thunberg has proved smarter and funnier than her critics – the teen recently rebuffed Trump’s attempt at mockery by changing her Twitter bio to his ‘insult’. Huge behaviour as always.
KIM KARDASHIAN AS LEGALLY BLONDE
The Kardashians always bring it for Halloween, and this year was no exception. Sadly deciding not to go as one of the Kardashian Kloset mannequins – the terrifying figure from the family’s bizarre resale site – Kim K went all out as Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods, taking inspiration from her recent entry into the world of law – as well as helping free prisoners and working on a documentary about prison reform, Kim is reportedly studying to become a lawyer. Serving not one, but three classic looks from the film, the reality star even recorded Elle’s (originally played by Reese Witherspoon) Harvard application video word-for-word. Kim K also loaned a dog for the occasion. Dedication, we love it.
LIZZO AS ‘100 PER CENT THAT BITCH’
When Lizzo tells you she didn’t wear a costume for Halloween, you better believe it. In a video posted to her Instagram, we hear a knock at the door before the singer’s hair stylist Shelby Swain says: “Finally my DNA test came in.” Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” then begins to play and she bursts in carrying a giant cotton bud and wearing a DNA costume, with – what else – ‘100 per cent that bitch’ underneath. So simple, yet so inspired.
ARIANA GRANDE AS ‘TWILIGHT ZONE’
Our fave celebs went hard for Halloween, but did any of them sit for five hours in make-up like Ariana Grande? The singer went as the “Twilight Zone” version of herself, inspired by the namesake episode of 60s American TV series Eye of the Beholder, in which a woman’s natural beauty makes her a freak in a futuristic society filled with pig-faced people – the woman eventually undergoes surgery to become one herself. It’s both a clever commentary on our societal obsession with looks, and a terrifying costume. Two birds!
LIL NAS X AS CAM’RON
King of internet Lil Nas X recreated one of fashion’s most iconic images: Cam’ron in that baby pink outfit. Taken in 2002 outside a NYFW Baby Phat show, the photo can be credited with predicting fashion's future. Lil Nas X took it one step further, completing his pink look by posing in front of a pink van – flip phone in hand, obvs. We thought 2018 was the year of Y2K style, but it looks like Lil Nas X just pioneered its return.
KYLIE JENNER AS THE LITTLE MERMAID
From the family that does the absolute most for Halloween, this was Kylie Jenner’s third look of the spooky season, after dressing as a Playboy bunny and Marilyn Monroe earlier this week. She also dressed her daughter Stormi in her 2019 Met Ball look, which inspired a somewhat humorous day online. This time, however, Kylie opted for something Stormi probably would have actually wanted to dress-up as: Ariel from The Little Mermaid.
BELLA HADID AS FRED FLINTSTONE
‘Stone-age, but make it fashion’ was the theme of Bella’s costume. Sporting short hair, bone accessories, and animal fur cuffs, Hadid turned up as Fred Flintstone. Although we don’t think we will ever get over her Beetlejuice look from last year, this does fill the void for a while.
NORMANI AS NAOMI CAMPBELL
After recreating early noughties moments for her “Motivation” video earlier this year, Normani took inspiration from Naomi Campbell’s 1991 Alaïa moment for Halloween. Recreating a set of photos taken of the supermodel, Normani got a regram from the fashion icon.
MEGAN THEE STALLION AS MORTAL KOMBAT FIGHTERS
Choose your fighter – Hot Girl Summer, Christian Girl Autumn, or Hottie Ween (we choose Christian Girl Autumn TBH). Megan Thee Stallion definitely chose the latter, however, dressing up with Jordyn Woods as Mortal Kombat fighters.
MISSY ELLIOTT AS MISSY ELLIOTT
The concept of celebrities dressing up as other celebrities, or as themselves, can have terrifying effects. But Missy Elliott recreating the cover for her seminal album Supa Dupa Fly, which was taken 22 years ago, is iconique to say the least.
GOLDIE AS A #TRAVELLER
You all know one, that rich kid you went to school with who was into rugby and rowing but has now found himself in Asia. He has grown himself some nice dreadlocks, taught himself “Wonderwall” on the guitar, and will speak to you about his gap year at any given opportunity. What could be more terrifying? To all those “#travelling”, Goldie sees you and has made you the inspiration for his Halloween costume. Posting a picture of himself with faux dreads, printed harem trousers, a bongo drum, and a beer can, the DJ wrote on Instagram “It’s been great #finding ourselves in Asia. Been here 3 days and the vibes is good, we are #traveling now and it beautiful, we get the odd gig here and there..to pay for our morning glory ... and boy!!! That glory’s good.” If you feel seen, sorry not sorry.
