The terrifying times celebrities dressed as other celebrities

When being a celebrity is essentially playing a character, is it surprising they all dress up as each other?

Where Halloween used to be about either succumbing to the gore and dousing yourself in an obscene amount of fake blood, or else donning something thotty and topping it off with a pair of Poundland devil ears, recently it feels like zombies, vampires, and werewolves have become secondary to the strange reality of the every day. We’re stepping away from the plastic fangs, and towards the ‘influencer’ costumes (a bog-standard hoodie and leggings, FYI), or else looking to memes for inspiration.

Then there’s another enduring classic of the Halloween genre: celebrity costumes. But it’s not just us mere mortals who are intent on dressing up as our fave (or not-so-fave) celebs, with a whole host of high-profile stars dressing as… well, each other. Last week, Kylie Jenner dressed her daughter, Stormi, as herself in her Met Gala outfit from earlier this year. The picture, which was uploaded onto Jenner’s Instagram account, inspired some mixed reactions. Primarily: what would lead the make-up mogul to dress her own daughter up as her?

But Stormi is not the only one to succumb (willingly or unwillingly, we’re not sure) to the celebs dressing as celebs trend. In the spirit of Halloween, we decided to take a walk down memory lane, and reminisce on the – often horrifying – times the rich and the famous have looked to themselves for inspiration.

Think of Ellen as the patient zero of this Halloween celebrity list extravaganza. She has found herself imitating her fair few of celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, which you can view here. But it is her Nicki Minaj attire which felt most fitting for a list inspired by the terrifying nature of Hollywood. Here she is ringing in the good old spirit of Halloween, fake tan and all.

Standing in the hallway of what appears to be the set of Gossip Girl, Nicky Hilton Rothschild – hotel heiress and now married into one of the world's richest families – chose to dress as her older sister Paris. Miss Hilton lives on in our hearts as a true 00s icon, embracing the good, the bad, and the ugly of celebrity culture. But using your own sister as costume inspiration for the scary season either feels like a testament to Paris’ power as a noughties idol or a glimpse into the Hilton’s sister dynamics.

Here we have YouTubers, Jake Paul and his wife Tana Montagu, dressed as fellow YouTubers Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star. Last year the pair dressed up as Brtiney Spears and Justin Timberlake, in the all-iconic, all-denim look for Halloween, but as I think we can conclude by now, Halloween is about creating content rather than looking scary. Sharing a moment that will get you those likes, perpetuating the meme cycle that fuels most of these stars’ careers, that is the true spirit of Halloween.

You know what, seeing Larry David on a skateboard under the setting sun is a beautiful image. It fills our spooky hearts with joy.

This image really is haunting. The likeness, is well, it’s uncanny, and I for one am shocked that no one else has noticed the resemblance before. Or maybe you have and we are just late to the party. Anyway, dressing up as a “Tie-loathing adventurer, philanthropist & troublemaker” (Branson’s words, not ours) - i.e. billionaire, is the most fitting Halloween costume of them all for our troubled times. Billionaires are the spectres haunting society. They are the real-life protagonists of ghost stories past. Who needs tales of vampires sucking blood when the 1% literally suck the goodness out of the world every day?

Kim found herself at the centre of a meme-storm when she first wore this Givenchy dress to the Met Ball in 2013, when she was pregnant with North. A couple of years later, she put those floral gloves back on and recreated the look while carrying Saint. Love them or loathe them, the Kardashian’s know how to capitalise on a meme (*clears throat* riiiise and shineeee), or turn it into a Halloween costume. Although she is well known for dressing as other A-listers, such as Cher, Pamela Anderson, and Aaliyah, Kim dressing as Kim is truly the pinnacle of it all. Happy Halloween!
