Grimes is set to judge a new, avatar-based singing competition, Alter Ego

The series, also judged by will.i.am and Alanis Morissette, will ‘merge talent and technology to revolutionise the singing competition show’

Remember WarNymph, Grimes’ “digital avatar” that she sent out into the world to promote Miss Anthropocene while pregnant with X Æ A-XII? In case you need a refresher, the project was pretty successful, culminating in the sale of her WarNymph crypto art collection for almost $6 million earlier this year.

Appropriate then, that Grimes will judge a new host of avatar-based musicians in the upcoming TV show Alter Ego. Billed as “the world’s first avatar singing competition series”, the show will see contestants perform as their “dream avatars” via motion capture technology.

Alter Ego merges talent and technology to revolutionise the singing competition show,” explains the president of Fox’s alternative entertainment and specials department, Rob Wade.

Grimes will also be joined by the musician, veteran singing competition judge, and fellow Mars enthusiast will.i.am, as well as Alanis Morissette, and US TV personalities Nick Lachey and Rocsi Diaz. A release date is yet to be announced.

That’s not all Grimes has in the works, either. Having recently previewed a new song, “Shinigami Eyes”, alongside news of an upcoming podcast, she’s also shared that her next full-length record will be a space opera that revolves around a lesbian AI romance.

Earlier this month, the musician was also announced as one of several musicians — also including The 1975, Bon Iver, and Jorja Smith — set to create immersive art installations for Undercurrent, a New York-based event raising awareness of the climate crisis.

Take a look at Grimes and the other Alter Ego judges on the set of the upcoming show below.
