While Bella Hadid opts for vintage Dior and Aquaria revives a legendary Versace look, here are the best fits of the week
Contemporary style is perhaps more indebted to Jean Paul Gauliter than it was in the years leading up to his sudden retirement in 2020. Between a resurgence in Y2K fashion and a bottomless hunger for niche, one-off pieces, the resale market of vintage JPG has gone through the roof. See also: Roberto Cavalli, Tom Ford’s Gucci, and Galliano’s Dior.
If the last week or so is anything to go by, a huge number of celebs are lucky enough to have a plug – or at least a prime membership to The RealReal. Bree Runway, Symone, and Cardi B have all torn through Gaultier’s archives, pulling out limited edition Supreme collabs, couture gowns, and cyberpunk slips from the designer’s AW95 collection.
Bella Hadid, a self-professed depop fanatic, also flexed her thrifting muscles, showcasing 00s Dior and Pucci pedal pushers. Elsewhere, Drag Race’s Aquaria stepped into a latex bondage dress inspired by Donatella Versace’s 1996 Met Gala look and Lil Nas X’s turn on the 2020 Grammys red carpet. Then, keeping to theme, Dua Lipa channelled heritage “Slave 4 U” Britney in full-look Blumarine while Megan Thee Stallion gave 90s red carpet vixen in a slinky, diamante chain mail creation by Natalia Fedner.

ASHLEY OLSEN
While technically a few weeks ago now, we couldn’t not mention Ashley Olsen’s machete-wielding, lager-swilling off-duty drip. Dressed in white linen and YEEZY sneakers, Ashley paced through the North American woodlands like an enraged craft-beer enthusiast. Perhaps she heard Phoebe Philo was back?
BELLA HADID
A depop notification flashes up on your phone – “Hiya gorj, could I get this for £2.75?” – so you click onto their profile, only to find it’s Bella Hadid chancing her luck all whilst vying for a spot on Depop Drama. She makes a fuss about postage but the vintage Miss Dior knit is, quite frankly, hers for the taking. And you throw in a pair of your mum’s pedal pushers for good measure.
ARCA
This is what Harley Davidson doesn’t want you to see. Arca swapped out her Bottega Veneta for this biker-stripper confection, presumably rustled up in the hot-headed dreams of America’s most lewd biker gangs. A flasher trench, revelatory cut-outs, swooping lines, strappy thongs, and thigh-high boots – it’s actually all Raf Simons and Namilia.
BILLIE EILISH
Billie presumably got whiff that Vivienne Westwood’s Boucher corsets were having a moment, slipping into this vegetable patchworked iteration from Miaou – the french label plundering the Y2K movement for all its low slung trousers, meshy bustiers, and mini skirts. Oui!
BREE RUNWAY
Having spent last week partying with Doja Cat in LA, it’s a surprise that Bree Runway is wearing anything other than Roberto Cavalli. Instead, she’s managed to cop jeans from Supreme and Gaultier’s 2019 collaboration (which, yes, is vintage in hypebeast terms) and a pair of limited edition Tabis. In the clasp of Bree’s hand is a Marc Jacobs miroir bag from his tenure at Louis Vuitton – a style which used to dangle from the crook of Paris Hilton’s elbow back when Kim Kardashian was still organising her closet.
DUA LIPA
The work of stylist Lorenzo Posocco, Dua was – gasp! – on holiday this week, wearing head-to-toe Blumarine. The label, which was recently overtaken by designer Nicola Brognano, is rooted in all the glitz and glam of the early aughts.
AQUARIA
Another one looking to the figureheads of millennium style is Drag Race winner Aquaria, who took to Instagram to flaunt their Donatella-indebted BDSM look. The original dress, which was crafted from leather, not hot pink latex, was taken from Gianni’s AW92 collection. In 2018, Kim Kardashian wore a redux of the look to the Met Gala afterparty, making this Versace’s hardest working garment – second only to that bloody jungle dress.
CARDI B
Cardi B proves Jean Paul Gaultier is not only a master couturier but an expert illusionist – craftily hiding her burgeoning baby bump beneath the designer’s archival cyberdots. And it’s not the first time the rapper has stepped out in cyber Gaultier, either. In 2019 Cardi attended the Hustlers premiere in a yellow, speckled dress from the same collection.
MEGAN THEE STALLION
Celebrating her Sports Illustrated magazine cover, Megan Thee Stallion stepped out in a completely sheer, rhinestoned gown by Natalia Fedner this week. As styled by Zerina Akers, the dress’s bare-all slit was laddered in rows of crystals, forged from over 40 feet of Swarovski diamonds. Forget what you heard – it’s actually an expensive girl summer.
