Back in February, when Simon Porte Jacquemus sent a miniscule version of his signature Le Saq Chiquito down the runway at his AW19 womenswear show, we thought we’d hit the peak of the tiny bag trend – but reader, how wrong we were. Just last month, Lizzo showed up to the AMA’s carrying a Valentino purse that made Jacquemus’ own tote positively hefty, and now, Chanel has gotten in on the act, too.
At the label’s annual Métiers d’art show, which this season returned to Paris after a brief appearance in New York, models including Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber sauntered through a set which channelled Coco Chanel’s own rue Cambon apartment, with many carrying Borrower-sized iterations of the classic Boy and Gabrielle bags.
As part of a largely monochrome collection which paid tribute to the legendary maison’s archive but still felt decidedly contemporary, there was also a series of tiny gold gilt bird cages lined with velvet pochettes, as inspired by the cage that once stood in a corner of Coco’s home. Notably, the show marked Virginie Viard’s first Métiers d’art presentation at the head of the house, after Karl Lagerfeld passed away in February.
The bags weren’t the only things that had been dialled down to miniscule proportions, though. A number of looks were finished with stacks of gold necklaces and Chanel’s signature pearls, some of which were strung with miniature gold perfume bottles. An idea also seen at Celine earlier this year, are we witnessing the makings of a trend? Watch this space.
