@victoriassecretFashion / NewsFashion / NewsIt’s official: the Victoria’s Secret show is #cancelledThe brand’s glittering annual extravanganza is no moreShareLink copied ✔️November 22, 2019November 22, 2019TextJessica Heron-Langton Known for its diamond-encrusted bras, flamboyant angel wings, and the perpetual promotion of age-old gender stereotypes, the Victoria’s Secret show is officially cancelled. And no, not in the internet sense, in the literal sense. The annual show, which previously aired on the ABC network every December, saw a dramatic drop in its viewership last year, and now, according to an announcement by parent company L Brands Inc, it will no longer be holding its once-revered runway extravaganza. No real surprise, when you consider that, over the course of the last few years, the show became a stark reminder of the conservative beauty standards which have long plagued the industry. But where an ever-increasing list of brands have finally begun to read the room and take a step towards inclusivity and diversity, VS has remained largely white and skinny. Alongside this, the brand suffered internal battles, with chief marketing officer, Ed Razek, stepping down after a disastrous interview where he explained the brand would not cast transgender or plus-sized models “because the show is a fantasy”. Despite Razek’s departure, VS continued to fall behind a number of contemporary brands embracing inclusivity, most notably Savage X Fenty, whose NYFW show which was praised for its use of diverse models and performers. Although the label has tried to catch up, with the American brand hiring its first trans model after Razek left and including plus-sized models in its latest ad campaign, it was all a little too late for the brand. Earlier this week former VS angel Bella Hadid also announced that Rihanna’s Fenty show was the “first time on a runway that I felt really sexy”. She explained, “I never felt powerful on a runway, like, in my underwear.” Rihanna has well and truly killed the VS show, and last night it was announced that Normani, who performed at the Savage X Fenty show, has also just been named the brand’s first-ever ambassador. This December, we’ll be tuning back in to Amazon Prime and reliving RiRi’s show – and probably not missing Victoria or her secrets all that much. Escape the algorithm!
