Diesel’s first-ever genderless fragrance celebrates fluidity and freedom

WHY SHOULD I CARE? 

When it comes to pushing the boundaries of beauty and fashion, it’s fair to say that Diesel never fails to get the job done – whether that’s by encouraging people to celebrate their flaws, shooting legendary, nightclub-based campaigns, or reconnecting long-lost love matches. This time around, the Italian label is breaking down traditional gender norms with its new, gender-fluid fragrance: D by Diesel. 

Crafted by Givaudan perfumers Nisrine Grillié, Shyamala Maisondieu, and Louise Turner, and manufactured by L'Oréal, Diesel’s eau de toilette marks the brand’s first-ever all-gender scent – created to reflect the way that Gen Z youths have embraced fluidity and freedom through their creativity and how this has shaped our culture. 

Addictive, fresh and dynamic, the fragrance combines a bourbon vanilla infusion from Madagascar with diva lavender hearts from Provence to create a unique scent that adapts to your skin, no matter who you are. At first spritz, expect to feel the energy of spicy ginger and aromatic lavender. Later on, the scent will adjust to fit your own skin, leaving hints of cotton-like freshness (similar to denim, of course) before shifting towards sensual, deep vanilla tones.

Expanding its positive impact, the brand was environmentally conscious while crafting D by Diesel. Besides its main ingredients being sustainably sourced and containing no animal-derived ingredients, the fragrance’s bottle – which was designed as a crushed, crumpled-up version of the brand’s iconic ‘Diesel For Successful Living’ logo to signify leaving your mark – is refillable, made from 25 per cent recycled glass, and comes in recycled packaging sans wasteful cellophane. AKA, it’s low-impact and eco-conscious, without compromising on quality.

Ahead of the launch, Dazed and Diesel teamed up for the D by... social campaign, showcasing seven multi-talented, changemaking creatives around the world – from model and transgender activist Ella Snyder to beauty activist Salem Mitchell, and musician Omizs. It's helmed by a short film, which highlights how those same creatives use their own fluidity to evolve their creative spaces and paint a portrait of a generation that’s defying the definitions of the industries that they are in.
