Luckily for us, he constantly carried a camera to capture all the famous faces that popped up at the likes of Studio 54 and the Factory. “I take my camera everywhere,” he once said. “Having a few rolls of film to develop gives me a good reason to get up in the morning.” Now, no less than 50 of those photos are up for grabs in an eBay auction, to benefit the philanthropic work of the Andy Warhol Foundation. Dozens of artworks – ranging from Warhol’s celebrity polaroid portraits, to black and white photographs, to original screen prints and posters – are included in the sale, with a few days left to place bids. Among the portraits of Warhol’s superstar milieu are images of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Debbie Harry, Keith Haring, Annie Leibovitz, Marsha P. Johnson, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Elsewhere, the artist’s obsession with fame comes through in snapshots of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in their early careers, alongside cultural icons including Mick Jagger and Issey Miyake. As well as raising money for charity, the sale aims to provide a way to collect Warhol’s work for us peasants who can’t afford to shell out $195 million on a piece of pop art. In that spirit, starting prices range from around $100 to $200 (for rare books and posters), to upwards of $15,000 (see: a 1977 self-portrait of the artist). It’s also a celebration of the Andy Warhol Foundation passing $3 million in total sales with eBay for Charity, the online marketplace’s philanthropic arm. This figure comes from 800 individual sales with an average price of just over $3,500. That might still seem like a significant chunk of your savings for a single polaroid, but needless to say, compared to Warhol’s normal auction prices, it’s a steal.
