‘M to the B’ and Fleetwood Mac skateboarder: TikTok’s best videos of 2020

The video sharing app has released its top viral moments, memes, creators, and songs of the past year

Global pandemic aside, 2020 has been TikTok’s year. The video sharing platform has skyrocketed in popularity over the last 12 months, boasting over one billion users worldwide. Now, as we come to the end of 2020 (finally), the app has revealed exactly what these users have been watching. Enter: the Year on TikTok: Top 100.

“It’s been our honour to watch these videos and creators grow and share what have become iconic, sometimes even life-changing moments of 2020,” Vanessa Pappas, the interim head of TikTok, said in a statement. “TikTok is here to bring joy, and with the year we’ve experienced, I’m thrilled to take a trip down memory lane and celebrate the myriad of ways the TikTok community helped us come together, bridge divides, and find both lightness and poignancy when we needed it most.”

Kicking off the app’s biggest viral moments is Bella Poarch’s head-bobbing “M to the B” video, while Nathan Apodaca’s Fleetwood Mac skateboarding video comes in a close second. The former made mid-2010s Blackpool grime star Millie B a global name, while the latter sparked a number of recreations by the band themselves.

This year’s fave memes including the #YouHaveTo challenge, in which people overlay often very normal suggestions with very intense music – TikTok’s example comes from Catfish’s Nēv Schulman, who tells people they “have to stop believing that their (online lover’s) camera is broken”. Other notable mentions include the “Blinding Lights” dance – famously performed by the McFarland family – and Jordan Scott’s declaration that he “ain’t never seen two pretty best friends, it’s always one of them gotta be ugly”.

Of course, Charli D’Amelio tops the Rising Stars list, with Tabitha Brown and Bella Poarch taking second and third respectively. When it comes to celebs on TikTok, Jason Derulo steals the crown, followed by runners-up Kylie Jenner and Lizzo.

The top songs are Jason Derulo and Jawsh 685’s “Savage Love”, Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé’s “Savage” remix, Travis Scott and Young Thug’s “OUT WEST”, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP”, and “Say So” by Doja Cat.
