An unreleased Virgil Abloh beat tape, Off The Rip, is on the way

The designer-slash-DJ was working on the record with music producer Cardo prior to his death

Unreleased music from Virgil Abloh is set to be released in the wake of the designer and DJ’s passing. According to his collaborator, Cardo, the pair were working on a beat tape — titled Off The Rip — prior to his death in 2021.

The record is “still coming”, Cardo adds in a tweet posted earlier this week. “Has to.”

Despite being better-known for his founding role at Off-White and four-year reign at Louis Vuitton (which officially came to an end last week at the label’s AW22 show), Abloh pursued a career as a DJ in his teenage years, and went on to play everything from Off-White afterparties to Coachella.

Cementing his connection to the music industry, the multi-hyphenate artist is also credited as a creative director on several Kanye West projects, including My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Yeezus, and contributed artwork to albums by A$AP Rocky, Kid Cudi, and many more.

In 2020, meanwhile, Abloh collaborated with artist George Condo to launch a series of live YouTube sets in response to the pandemic, as part of Dazed’s #AloneTogether campaign. He also released his latest track under his own name — a collaboration with serpentwithfeet titled “Delicate Limbs” — in 2021.

Cardo himself is known as the producer behind tracks such as Drake’s “God’s Plan” and Travis Scott’s “Through the Late Night”. Beyond the announcement of Off The Rip, he hasn’t offered any more details on the upcoming beat tape, with the release date still TBA.

In the meantime, you can revisit Abloh’s latest track, “Delicate Limbs”, below.
