The musician has dropped a new single and video for her Ty Dolla $ign-featuring track, “Hit Different”. The song is one of a smattering of tracks released since her debut album Ctrl came out in 2017, following collaborations with Kendrick Lamar on “All The Stars” – which featured on the Black Panther soundtrack – and Justin Timberlake on “The Other Side”. “Hit Different” could signal the imminent arrival of SZA’s second album, which is expected this year. In August 2019, the artist said fans could expect the record “soon as fuck”, but later confirmed it would actually arrive in 2020. Last month, in a now-deleted tweet, the singer suggested that the president of her label, Punch (AKA Terrence Louis Henderson), is holding back the new material. SZA told fans: “At this point, y’all gotta ask Punch. I’ve done all I can do.” She also inferred that she’s being kept in the dark as much as fans are about the release date, which Punch reportedly keeps telling her is “soon”. However, following the subsequent hashtag #FreeSZA trending on Twitter, the singer added: “Don’t nobody need to free me. Lmao I’m not being held hostage n neither is my music!! Sometimes u gotta be patient… sometimes no is a blessing… I trust the ppl around me.” While you wait for SZA’s album, read about the singer’s online obsessions here, and watch the video for “Hit Different” below.
