Back in 2007, Lykke Li and Robyn had breakout albums of individualistic electropop – and those artists have had a great 2014, but a new breed's begun to take over. Tove Lo's "Habits" (and squiffy Hippie Sabotage remix) have dominated European radio all summer, Mapei's "Don't' Wait" was rightly acclaimed, and artists like Frida Sundemo and SVE have emerged as exciting new voices.Meanwhile, Robyn has introduced the first singing to her label Konichiwa Records: Stockholm native Zhala, who supported her co-headlining tour with Röyksopp this summer and has a look that falls somewhere between Frida Khalo, FKA twigs and Princes Leia. She also might be one of the wildest new pop voices we've heard all year. Following the ravey "Prophet", her rhythmic and addictive new single "I'm In Love" marries her exuberant vocal with the steel pans of "Pass This On". In the video above, Zhala braids hair with "family, cousins, friends, new friends and people I admire." It was directed by Roxy Farhat, who also did The Knife's "A Tooth For An Eye". "We wanted to make a homage to the love and understanding there is between women," explains Zhala. "I often feel like there's a commercial picture of women competing with each other but my relationships with women are the most comforting thing I have in my life. I have a great team, they all help me to make my vision reality."
