Earlier this year, Elliot Page announced an upcoming memoir, titled Pageboy, which will discuss his relationship with his body, his experience of being one of the famous trans people in the world since coming out in late 2020, and “the cesspool that Hollywood can be”. Now, the actor has revealed the cover for the forthcoming book.
“Writing a book has come up a few times over the years, but it never felt right and quite frankly, it didn’t feel possible,” Page writes in an Instagram post showing the newly-unveiled cover. “I could barely sit still, let alone focus long enough to complete such a task. At last, I can be with myself, in this body. So, I’ve written a book about my story.”
The cover itself features a portrait of Page shot by Catherine Opie. “At many points in my life, it felt unbearable to be in front of a camera,” he says. “But making this cover with acclaimed photographer Catherine Opie was a joyful experience that I will never forget.”
Hitting bookshelves in June next year, Pageboy comes at a vital time for the trans community, whose rights are increasingly under threat due to reactionary politics, censorship, and violent protest. “Trans people are facing increasing attacks, from physical violence to the banning of healthcare, and our humanity is regularly ‘debated’ in the media,” Page notes in the post. “The act of writing, reading, and sharing the multitude of our experiences is an important step in standing up to those who wish to silence and harm us.”
“Books have helped me, saved me even,” he adds, explaining his hopes that Pageboy will help others to feel less alone, and to feel seen and represented, “no matter who they are or what path they are on”.
Take a look at the Pageboy cover below. The memoir will be released on June 6, 2023.
