A four-part documentary on the personal life and creative process of Hayao Miyazaki, first broadcast in early 2019, has been made available to watch for free by the Japanese broadcaster NHK.
10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki chronicles the legendary animator and Studio Ghibli co-founder’s work on projects such as Ponyo, The Wind Rises, and From Up on Poppy Hill, which he worked on with his son, Goro. The animator is “shown as a passionate artisan, a steadfast trailblazer, and a father butting heads with his son” according to the documentary’s description.
The documentary will also cover the effects of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, which occurred during the 2011 production of From Up on Poppy Hill, on the animation team and the relationship between father and son.
Recently, Studio Ghibli films also hit Netflix for the first time, released in several batches. (Let’s just hope this doesn’t mean any live-action remakes are headed our way in the future.)
