From Young Thug to Wolfgang Tillmans, we compile our favourite catwalk cameos of the SS17 show season
After four weeks, as many cities and countless more shows, yesterday the SS17 season drew to a close. It’s been a crazy month with many labels doing ‘See Now, Buy Now’ for the first time and several others staging their first shows with new creative heads (Saint Laurent, Dior and Lanvin). We’ve also seen a fair few stars (from a rapper to a porn actor) hit the runway and steal the limelight from the professional models – here are our favourites.
TEYANA TAYLOR AND SELAH MARLEY @ YEEZY SEASON 4
Following her appearance in Kanye West’s “Fade” video, it seems that Teyana Taylor will forever be known as “The Body”. People haven’t stopped talking about her since and – just weeks after the video’s release – Taylor turned up and turned heads at Kanye’s Yeezy Season 4 show on Roosevelt Island, modelling a black bodysuit (with a gaping hole in the middle exposing her washboard abs) and a pair of ankle boots. But Taylor wasn’t the only surprise guest at Yeezy Season 4, though – Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley’s daughter Selah also made an appearance. Marley, who was ranked in the 2016 Dazed 100 and starred in Calvin Klein’s AW16 campaign, modelled a black hooded shearling jacket and a pair of thigh-high PVC boots.
ROWAN BLANCHARD AND WHOOPI GOLDBERG @ OPENING CEREMONY
This season, Opening Ceremony’s creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon got political. They invited a selection of influential women to walk in their show – a group that included Rowan Blanchard, Whoopi Goldberg, Alia Shawkat, Aubrey Plaza, Natasha Lyonne and Rashida Jones – after which they spoke on different societal issues and encouraged those present to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
WOLFGANG TILLMANS @ HOOD BY AIR
Shayne Oliver’s Hood By Air has long been known for its association with the people and places that make up New York’s underground creative scene. Previous shows have seen the likes of A$AP Rocky, Boychild, Mykki Blanco and radical Russian artist Slava Mogutin take to the catwalk, but this time round Oliver enlisted feted photographer Wolfgang Tillmans to model the collection.
YOUNG THUG @ VFILES
Okay, okay, so this one wasn’t technically a catwalk cameo but it did involve a star hitting the runway. At VFiles, Young Thug got up from his front row seat – mid-show and mid-cigar – to make an adjustment to a model’s outfit, causing a minor social media meltdown in the process. The Atlanta trap star was a mentor to the emerging designers showing at the event so his actions weren’t misplaced – but who knew he was such a fashion pedant? We do now.
COLBY KELLER @ HASBEENS & WILLBEES
This one went a little more under the radar: porn actor Colby Keller walked at Hasbeens & Willbees’ runway auction, alongside some model favourites of New York’s new wave, like Richie Shazam. This wasn’t Keller’s modelling debut however, the actor also starred in Vivienne Westwood’s SS16 campaign photographed by Juergen Teller and an editorial in Arena Homme + shot by the same photographer.
LAUREN HUTTON @ BOTTEGA VENETA
This season marked Bottega Veneta’s 50th anniversary and so, to celebrate, they staged an extra special show featuring iconic model, actor and 41-time Vogue cover star Lauren Hutton. The last time she hit the catwalk was at Tom Ford’s SS11 show (alongside Beyoncé, Julianne Moore and Lou Doillon), so this was her runway appearance in six years – though, closing the show arm-in-arm with Insta model du jour Gigi Hadid, it was like she’d never left.
PARIS HILTON AT PHILIPP PLEIN
Philipp Plein is known for his flashy, no-expense-spared fashion shows. In the past he’s enlisted the likes of Courtney Love and Azealia Banks to perform at his shows and this season, in something of a blast from the 00s past, he recruited Fergie who sang from the back of a convertible. In line with 00s nostalgia, Paris Hilton, who has apparently not aged at all since her Simple Life days, took to the catwalk in a chain-adorned split-to-the-thigh gown.
