To promote their new collection, Levi’s have collaborated with Dazed 100 photographer Petra Collins on a portrait series. In this series, Collins captures a denim-clad cast of women which includes punk rocker Joan Jett, artist Phoebe Collings-James and Jillian Hervey of neo-soul duo Lion Babe. The Dazed contributor stars in the series herself, which is shot in the photographer's signature hazy light.
“I remember wearing [Levi’s] throughout the Runaways,” Jett told Elle. “You can probably find a lot of photos, of not just me, but other girls wearing them... I've gone back and forth [with denim], but now I'm back.”
Back in the 70s, Jett’s became known for her fearless style. But she’s more than just a cult style icon – she and her anarchic all-female punk rock band The Runaways paved the way for women in a genre dominated by men. Collins holds a similar perspective, a person famously outspoken on feminist issues. In 2013 her Instagram account was deleted after she posted a bikini picture in which a trace of pubic hair was visible, an act which provoked discussion around censorship and women’s body hair. Collins has also released a book, titled “Babe”, which brings together work from her all-female art collective “The Ardorous”.
