Hell hath no fury like a Drake scorned. That’s how the old saying goes, right? Last night, the Grammy Award-winning rapper surprise-dropped three albums: Iceman, Habibti and Maid of Honour, after initially announcing only one. To say his beef with Kendrick Lamar has stained his image would be an understatement. At the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show in history, Lamar had the whole world gleefully singing along to a song (“Not Like Us”) calling Drake a “paedophile”; a song that also won all five of its Grammy nominations last year.

While the cultural mood around Drake has shifted, the appetite for his return only increased. Last year, he headlined all three nights of Wireless, becoming the first artist in the festival’s history to do so, but the run received mixed reviews. The Guardian described the “disjointed” three nights as reeking of “desperation”. The same could be said of his three-album run, too.

While some of the Dazed team disagree, to me it is an album – sorry, albums – of unmemorable misses. Iceman is probably the most listenable of the bunch, but even then, I found myself struggling not to skip songs. I wanted to get through the album as fast as possible to end my suffering. The one thing I admire about Drake is his dedication to cursing people out. From DJ Khaled to Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole, he reminds me of Taylor Swift in this regard: always wronged, and so very greedy! And with corny ass lyrics like those in “Shabag”, where he raps: “All of my opps, they dead / Why do they gas me up? / Where does it go? My head,” you could argue that they share a quill.

Below, the internet reacts to Drake’s long-awaited return to music – with many left disappointed and hungry.
