Across its two weekends the festival saw several surprise appearances and unexpected duets, ranging from the transcendent to the pointless. Here are some of our favourites. 1/9 You may like next 1/9 1/9 SABRINA CARPENTER AND NORAH JONES??? pic.twitter.com/mS4aScdAHa— cal is caffeinated ☕️ (@dayasmatcha) April 20, 2024SABRINA CARPENTER AND NORAH JONESComing fresh after the heels of Azealia Banks declaring her love for KT Tunstall, this one made me feel like reality was collapsing. Whatever next: Olivia Rodrigo doing a tour with Katie Melua? Chappell Roan releasing an album of James Blunt covers??Sabrina Carpenter and Norah Jones (a pop-jazz artist who I will always associate with a certain middle-of-the-road tastefulness, the stuff of Natwest adverts and middle-class dinner parties in the early 00s) do not belong in the same universe. How has Sabrina Carpenter even heard of Norah Jones? She’s, like, 19? (She’s 24.) This surprise guest appearance is so out-of-time, so defiantly uncool, that I actually really respect it: bringing out Norah Jones is not what you would do if you were chasing cheap clout or an easy viral moment; it’s the act of a true, dedicated Norahnator. This is what integrity looks like. Five stars.view more + 2/9 2/9 I don’t mean to sound insane but that eclipse shifted something we literally are so back. pic.twitter.com/mSwd7x7Iz9— baby genius, MA (@enfant_cerebral) April 13, 2024BILLIE EILISH AND LANA DEL REYSitting together on an ornate balcony, Billie and Lana performed “Video Games” and “Ocean Eyes” (the lead single from Billie’s debut EP). What made this so memorable was the affection and respect they clearly have for one another – Billie, on the record as a Lana stan, was grinning from ear to ear the whole way through, and at one point declared to the audience, “This is the reason for half you bitches’ existence, including mine.” Lana, for her part, described Billie as “the voice of your generation, the voice of our generation”, and said she was “so fucking grateful” to have her on stage. Two beautiful, talented women from different generations supporting each other and having a laugh… it’s just nice!view more + 3/9 3/9 sky ferreira at coachella pic.twitter.com/HcrvFCJlTH— sky ferreira archive (@skyarchirve) April 14, 2024SKY FERREIRA AND KEVIN ABSTRACTSky Ferreira made a surprise appearance at the beginning of Kevin Abstract’s set on Saturday, performing a cover of the 2010 country classic “Need You Now” by Lady A. Wearing a leather jacket and sunglasses, she looked great and sounded even better. It was a transcendent performance which proved that, however her career has been thwarted over the last ten years, Ferreira remains a star.view more + 4/9 4/9 Tyler the creator and childish gambino fucking it up pic.twitter.com/hW0Tzn9eq6— dev (@devinbreee) April 14, 2024TYLER, THE CREATOR AND JUST ABOUT EVERYONESome of the guest appearances across the festival verged on the gimmicky, but Tyler, The Creator opted for a more credible, music-orientated approach. During his headline set on Saturday night, he brought out some of the biggest names in hip-hop and R&B, including A$AP Rocky, Childish Gambino, Kali Uchis and Charlie Wilson, the former vocalist of The Gap Band and a legendary figure within the world of R&B and funk. Which is cool, but maybe he should have brought out the guy who wrote The Big Bang Theory or the dog from Marley and Me?view more + 5/9 5/9 KESHA JUST CHANGED THE LYRICS FOR TIK TOK TO “FUCK P DIDDY” AT COACHELLA WITH RENEÉ RAPP OH MY GODDD pic.twitter.com/RrDvsyPKmo— maxx HAS A BEYONCÉ AUTOGRAPH !!!! (@ArnoldMaxx) April 15, 2024RENEÉ RAPP, KESHA, AND THE L WORD CASTOn Sunday, Reneé Rapp was joined by surprise guest Kesha to perform “TiK ToK” – younger readers will struggle to believe me, but this was a smash hit song back in 2010 and it had nothing to do with the Chinese video-editing app we know and love today. In other respects, Kesha’s break-out single wasn’t so prescient – few lines have aged worse in the current moment than “wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy” – but she got around this on Sunday by changing the lyrics to “wake up in the morning like ‘fuck P Diddy’” (in reference to the recent sex trafficking allegations against the hip-hop mogul) and raising her middle finger in the air.Kesha wasn’t the only surprise cast that Reneé brought out: she was introduced by the cast and the creator of her favourite show The L Word, a cult 00s-era drama about a group of lesbian and bisexual women in LA.view more + 6/9 6/9 what the fvck is Camila Cabello doing at Lana Del Rey’s Coachella set 😭 pic.twitter.com/Y70hLzqbR5— dylan ∞ ☼ (@dylanisunique) April 20, 2024LANA DEL REY AND CAMILA CABELLORumours have been swirling for weeks that Taylor Swift was going to make a surprise appearance during Lana’s second headline set. We didn’t get that, but we were graced with the presence of a far more legendary figure instead: Camila Cabello! This was a strange pairing, for sure. Lana is sultry, mysterious, and perhaps the single greatest artist that humankind has ever produced; Cabello is…not quite any of those things, but “I Luv It’ is undeniably a bop. The performance felt tonally out-of-sync with the rest of Lana’s set (unlike last week’s duet with Billie Eilish), but the pair were having a great time dancing around together on stage – it was nice to see Lana goofing off and acting a bit silly for change!view more + 7/9 7/9 🚨 Kevin Abstract brought out Lil Nas X as his special guest at Coachella to perform their new song together. 🔥 pic.twitter.com/q00TPPCrNM— 𝙇𝙞𝙡 𝙉𝙖𝙨 𝙓 𝙉𝙚𝙬𝙨 (@LNXNews) April 21, 2024KEVIN ABSTRACT AND LIL NAS XDuring his solo set on Saturday, Brockhampton’s Kevin Abstract brought out Lil Nas X to perform a new collab, titled “Tennessee”. As he introduced Lil Nas X, Abstract said, “This is the first time I’ve ever publicly put out a song with the person I’m about to bring out. He means a lot to me and he means a lot to the culture and I’m very lucky to know him.”Lil Nas X – decked out in a white fur stole – gave a spirited performance; the song itself (a mid-tempo number with a trap beat and an extremely catchy chorus) sounded great, and it was nice to see two of hip-hop’s most significant gay artists coming together: as Kevin Abstract quipped on stage, “this is like the gay Watch the Throne.”view more + 8/9 8/9 Will Smith performing “Men In Black” at #Coachella will J Balvin: pic.twitter.com/LqHgRpef2G— philip lewis (@Phil_Lewis_) April 15, 2024WILL SMITH AND J BALVINFrom Paris Hilton to The L Word, it was a weekend of 00s nostalgia, but J Balvin looked back to the previous decade: during his set on Sunday night, Will Smith took to the stage – in a black suit and sunglasses – to perform the title track of Men in Black (1997). The set ended with Balvin being dragged off stage by dancers in black suits, while Smith pulled out the memory-erasing device that his character uses in the film.view more + 9/9 9/9 VAMPIRE WEEKEND AND PARIS HILTONDuring Vampire Weekend’s set, Paris Hilton took to the stage to play “cornball” – a lawn game which involves throwing bean bags at a board. This felt a bit pointless, like the kind of “celebrity appearance” a former Love Island star would make at a nightclub in Reading. By being so rooted in late 00s millennial culture, it was also a stark, haunting reminder of the passing of time and the inevitability of death.view more + 0/9 0/9
