Earlier this month (December 22), Britney Spears took to Instagram to hint that she’s been working on new music, saying that she had a “new song in the works”. Following a December 28 update on social media, however, it seems that the singer isn’t quite ready to return to the music industry.
In a lengthy note broken into several screenshots, Spears discusses being “hurt” by her family and the restrictions imposed as part of her 13-year conservatorship (which finally came to an end back in November). “I wanted to be nice but what they did to my heart was unforgivable!” she writes, adding of her music: “I asked for 13 years to perform new songs and remixes of my old songs… and every time I asked I was told ‘No…’”
“It was a setup to make me fail... Yet I knew exactly what I wanted my fans to see and it didn’t make sense how network television shows are showcasing my music with remixes of all my music… yet the person who owns the music is told no!”
She goes on to expand on her reasons for not returning to the music business since the end of her conservatorship this year. “So much wasted time to only embarrass me and humiliate me and I guess it seems odd to most now why I don’t even do my music any more… that’s just the surface issues.”
“People have no idea the awful things that were done to me personally… and what I’ve been through. I am scared of people and the business. They really hurt me,” she adds. Apparently, not doing music any more is also a way of saying “fuck you” to those who took advantage of her.
That isn’t to say that Britney fans — who rallied behind the #FreeBritney movement during her long legal battle — will have to go without new material forever. Elsewhere, the singer reflects on her aims for 2022, writing: “My goal for this year is to push myself a bit more and do things that scare me but not too much.”
Earlier this year, Britney also announced that she’d just finished shooting a film titled The Idol (not The Weeknd’s HBO drama of the same name, FYI). She’s also been working on a novel about a ghost trapped in limbo (sound familiar?), so she seems to have her hands full, even without dipping her toes back into music.
