Alongside the post, she explained that her label didn’t want her to release the single. Now, during a live-streamed set on Discord, the musician revealed that the single references her long-term feud with Azealia Banks. More specifically, Grimes explained that the song is “about having to defeat Azealia Banks when she tried to destroy my life”, referencing an incident in 2018 when Banks allegedly sat alone in billionaire Elon Musk’s house “for days”, waiting for Grimes to record an unfinished collab. Following her visit to their home, Banks posted a series of angry tweets suggesting that Musk was tweeting while on acid while she waited. Responding to Grimes’ new single in a now-deleted Instagram story, Banks stated: “Grimes def has some psychosexual obsession with me.” “I think it’s bitterness (because) she doesn’t have the musical capacity I have. Everything she does is out of pretentiousness, and it comes off like that… while everything I do is out of natural swag and geniusness lmaoo,” she continued. “Starting to notice all the weird undercover millennial racists hide out on Discord.” Grimes recently announced she would be partnering with Discord to play games with fans and drop some unreleased music. Besides “100 Percent Tragedy”, this has included a track, reportedly called “Shinigami Eyes”, which was shared on the platform in June. Yesterday (June 25), Grimes and BLACKPINK’s Jennie posted a series of photos together at Musk’s SpaceX facility in California. “Jennie and Grimes go to space,” tweeted Grimes, while Jennie captioned her IG post, “Rocket day with my fairy princess.” In 2018, Grimes collaborated with sub-unit yyxy of K-pop band Loona for their song “Love4eva”. Now, fans are hoping a project with BLACKPINK is in the works. Perhaps the group will make an appearance on Grimes’ upcoming “space opera” slash lesbian AI romance record? Otherwise, the musician tweeted that she will be featured on Lady Gaga’s upcoming Chromatica remix album. “I missed the deadline but it got moved back so now we can do my monologue,” she explained on Discord. Besides Grimes – Charli XCX, Bree Runway, Shygirl, Rina Sawayama, and Dorian Electra have confirmed appearances on the record. Check out the photos below.
