Cher reveals that her biopic is in the works

The film is set to bring together the producers of Mamma Mia! and Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth

If you were a fan of Cher’s stellar turn in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, then we have some good news. On the eve of her 75th birthday, the pop icon has announced (in a characteristically chaotic tweet) that a biopic is in the works at Universal Pictures, with the brains behind Mamma Mia! on board to produce.

In fact, the as-yet-untitled film will feature a range of high-profile figures from the film industry, Cher reveals, naming Judy Craymer, Gary Goetzman, and her “dear dear friend” and Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth.

Roth’s recent projects include co-writing Denis Villeneuve’s much-anticipated Dune adaptation, Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon, and 2018’s A Star Is Born, starring Lady Gaga. He’s also worked with Cher before, writing the script for 1987’s Suspect.

Craymer, meanwhile, was the one that came up with the idea of turning ABBA’s songs into a stage musical, which she then transported to the big screen with the help of Goetzman. The pair subsequently got to know Cher while making Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

The casting and plot of Cher’s biopic is yet to be revealed, and it’s unclear whether it’ll cover her whole life or focus on a specific period. Deadline does report, however, that it “will not be a break-into-song musical like Mamma Mia!”, but is more likely to resemble the 2018 Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Last month, Cher also mentioned that she’s “going to have to” go on RuPaul’s Drag Race at some point, adding that she’d consider a guest appearance as she’s well aware of the fan demand.
