The musician and artist’s fourth studio album dropped quickly. It features contributions from Sampha, Cassie, Gucci Mane, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Playboi Carti, Dev Hynes, and more. Solange had been teasing something exciting – which we all guessed was new music – with a mysterious, cryptic takeover of website BlackPlanet and a short video. In an essay which accompanied her Dazed cover, she wrote about recording parts of the album in Jamaica. In a later interview with the New York Times, she outlined that there was a “lot of jazz at the core” of her album, with drums and bass that nodded to hip hop and electronic music, “because I want it to bang and make your trunk rattle”. The album, originally slated for an autumn 2018 release, was written and executive produced by Solange. “When I am creating new work, I always feel a bit unbalanced. The circles get darker, my jaw a bit tighter, my hair less combed, my spirits more unaligned. I don’t sleep very well. I’m always buzzing,” Solange thoughtfully said of her creative process in her Dazed essay. In the last year, the artist has been working on other mediums of art, like her performance art piece Metatronia, and an outdoor performance at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas. Solange was also named the Harvard Foundation Artist of the Year. Solange tweeted following its release: “I’m filled with so much joy right now!!! Wow! I can’t thank y’all enough for this moment and for all the feelings I feel in my body! I’m bringing home w me everywhere I go y’alll and I ain’t running from s**t no more. Your love lifts me up so high. Thank you!” When I Get Home features 19 tracks than span sounds of electronic music, jazz, funk, R&B, and soul.
