What we learned from Frank Ocean’s now public Instagram

Breaking news!

Frank Ocean has developed a reputation for being a reclusive musician, but he’s finally unlocked his personal Instagram giving fans an insight into his life and mind. He posted a topless mirror selfie with the caption “welcome,” and of course we gladly scrolled through and over analysed all 307 posts in a desperate attempt to feel close to him.

His posts date back to last year when he attended the Met Gala and he uploaded a picture with actor Ansel Elgort. His feed is mostly a mix of cute selfies, random things that inspire him, and people he admires from Ciara to Zoë Kravitz.

Here’s what else we learned by looking at his feed.

HE LOVES ART AND IS OBSESSED WITH DAVID HOCKNEY

Frank is arty. He has two posts about David Hockney, one of which is “Pool with Two Figures”, which recently broke the auction record for a work by a living artist when it sold for just over £70 million. Hockney is openly gay and has explored LGBT relationships in his art, much like Frank. The musician also posted a picture from Olafur Eliasson’s Tate exhibit where the artist recreated the sun for “The Weather Project” in 2003.

HE’S BIG INTO BRITISH POP CULTURE

Aside from his appreciation of Hockney and the Tate, UK fans will feel extremely seen as his feed shows an appreciation for our bizarre island. He posted stills from Danny Boyle’s drug-fuelled 90s cult comedy Trainspotting. He’s also a bit of a royalist as he’s posted pictures of the Queen dressed in a garishly neon green get up for her birthday, and Princess Diana in a Sony Cap with glasses that are closer to workmen’s goggles than specs.

DESPITE HIS CELEBRITY, HE’S STILL EXCITED TO SHARE HIS ACHIEVEMENTS

Obviously Frank is massive now, but by the looks of his feed, he still pinches himself at the opportunities that come his way. You can see that in the way that he was posting pictures of his recent covers for 032C and i-D just to show his friends. He also takes pictures of fans when they ask for pictures of him. One picture shows a boy smiling with a basketball in his hands. “Now when people ask me for pictures I ask them for a picture too. Hi guy,” he wrote.

HE’S ALL ABOUT SELF CARE

Hair rollers, weed, and leg massages. Frank looks like he likes to pamper himself. And he deserves it, take it easy reclusive musical king.

HE ADMIRES THE PEOPLE WE LOVE TOO

His feed probably looks a lot like ours as he scrolls through idly to procrastinate from making magic. He follows photographers we like, like Tyler Mitchell. The 23-year-old became the first black photographer to shoot a Vogue magazine cover when he was selected for the Beyoncé issue. He also seems to like Rosie Matheson who created “Boys”, a long-term project that collected intimate portraits of young men. Among them, he’s keeping an eye on Dazed 100 alumni like up-and-coming Nigerian designer Mowalola, and New York-based artist Grace Alhbom.

HE HAS A FAMILY... AND HE LIKES THEM

We would not have known this if he didn’t open his page up to the public but it seems like Frank was not grown in a lab in an experiment to breed the perfect musician, he has a mother and was once a child. His feed has a selection of sweet childhood photos of him and his mum, one of them with the one-word caption: “Squad”. In another, he posted a screenshot to show that his brother got good grades in school. “Roy wins,” he wrote with a clap emoji. Sweet.

THERE’S BTS LOOKS AT ENDLESS, BLONDE AND HIS OTHER WORKS

He shows the stages of creation for his stage shows and merch showing how his recent tours have come together.

HIS BOOK COLLECTION IS BIG

The singer is also a bookworm, posting pictures of a pile of books on the floor. It’s either a collection that he was about to buy, or that he needs to organise as the caption reads: “very gay bookshelf soon”. He shows a keen interest in titles such as The Gay Flesh by Joe Leon Houston, and Faggots by Larry Kramer, a novel about the LGBT community before Aids in New York.

HE LOVES FASHION

Aside from following our Dazed Fashion account (Hi Frank!) he also posted pictures from the runway that inspire him like the recent Prada show, and those Gucci glitter pants he wore to his birthday. There are looks from Luar, a New York designer who was on this year’s Dazed 100. And, he took a mirror selfie with an Alexander Wang coke can glitter bag knock-off.

BASICALLY, HIS FINSTA LOOKS LIKE EVERY COOL PERSON YOU KNOW

His feed is basically just pictures of him, his friends and things he likes. It’s relatable with flashes of intellect and artiness – the perfect formula. In short, he is a mere mortal like us. We are all Frank.
