In an unsurprising turn of events, Nicki Minaj was revealed as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2016 this week. The “Anaconda” rapper – who’s already inspired video games, television shows and great works of art – was apparently given the honour for being an “outspoken advocate for equality”, and for standing up to “racism, misogyny, and sexuality” throughout her career.

Minaj’s new accolade was accompanied by a short video interview; in which the star shared her thoughts on sexism and the gender wage gap. “One thing I learned along the way in business is the necessity for you to be unapologetic about asking for how much money you deserve,” she reveals in the two-minute clip. “I pushed myself to be better with my showmanship, but I also decided, you know what? I want to be compensated well.”

She also shared her advice for other young women, adding that they should never “be ashamed to ask for the top dollar” in their field. “If I’m great at what I do, I can’t be denied,” she continues. “Some things may be overlooked but no one can deny my brand, and that’s the words of wisdom I would give to other young women.”
