Whenever the media and race are discussed in the same sentence, it’s usually to point out how people of colour have historically been misrepresented in stereotypical or narrow ways within a mainstream media monopolised by white people. And with racism still a very real and pervasive problem across the world, the issue of representation could not be more important and relevant.

However, Harlem rapper Azealia Banks has taken to twitter to hit out against black media publications, and has said that she thinks they are ‘counter-productive’. In a now-deleted tweet, the artist posted a photo from an article in popular African American magazine Ebony which spoke about her beef with Iggy Azalea, writing: “The only time I made it 2 ebony magazine was in a discussion of another white woman. Black media is counter productive.”

She then went on to claim that she doesn’t “fall in line with your self righteous black Christian social beliefs,” before adding: “So please stop covering me.”
