Moo Deng, Moo-ve over: meet Haggis, the new hippo du jour

Move over, Moo Deng – there’s a new baby pygmy hippo in town.

Yesterday (November 4), Edinburgh Zoo shared a post on X announcing the birth of a pygmy calf named Haggis. “Moo Deng? Who deng? Introducing … Haggis,” the account wrote. “Otto and Gloria have welcomed an ADORABLE pygmy hippo calf! She is doing well, but we’ll be keeping the hippo house closed for the time being so that our expert keepers can keep a close eye on mum and baby at this sensitive time.”

The internet rushed to criticise the zoo stirring up friction between Haggis and Moo Deng. “Why do they have to pit two beautiful women against each other?” asked one user on X. Some welcomed the news of Haggis’s birth, especially in light of the fact Moo Deng apparently endorsed Donald Trump after eating a watermelon with the Republican candidate’s name on it. “Man, fuck Moo Deng. Fucking fascist hippo,” wrote one disappointed fan.

Eventually Edinburgh Zoo issued an apology for encouraging a rivalry between the two women. “Sorry guys this is our official notes app apology. We were wrong to pit Haggis and Moo Deng against each other. There is space in this world for two beautiful pygmy hippo divas and we should celebrate them all. Sorry to Moo Deng. Let’s work it out on the remix.”
