Emmanuel is a youth activist and social entrepreneur, whose debut book, Dreaming in a Nightmare: Finding a Way Forward in a World That’s Holding You Back, was released earlier this month on Penguin and Stormzy’s imprint, Merky Books. Delving into the everyday inequality at the heart of austerity Britain, the book is both a first hand account of the trauma of systemic disempowerment Emmanuel has faced and a practical manual for young people like himself, who might not get advice on tackling this elsewhere. Having released her debut book Queer Intentions in 2019, Abraham is a London-based journalist whose work focuses mostly on LGBTQ+ culture and identity politics. In her sophomore book, We Can Do Better Than This, 35 voices – including Olly Alexander, Peppermint, Owen Jones, Beth Ditto, and Holland – explore the question of how we can achieve LGBTQ+ equality. The Making It Up As We Go Along programme features 45 minute digital workshops, talks, mentoring, and community building, with the goal of empowering and educating those hoping to break into fashion, art, photography, film, dance, music, publishing, digital media, video, and much more. Last month, Nowness commissioner and Sundance programmer Katie Metcalfe and Nowness video commissioner Shelley Jones were joined by filmmakers Fenn O'Meally and Jabu Nadia Newman to discuss how to get your films made and seen. Previously, Dazed Digital editor Anna Cafolla was joined by staff writer Brit Dawson to discuss how to focus your journalism on making a positive change in society and culture.
