On their quest to spread the word about an apocalyptic comet, DiCaprio and Lawrence — playing professor Dr. Randall Mindy and grad student Kate Dibiasky, respectively — bump up against the likes of Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi (AKA Scott Mescudi), and Timothée Chalamet. Taking the news to the president (Meryl Streep), meanwhile, they’re dismissed by her slimy chief of staff — AKA Jonah Hill in an ill-fitting suit. “This guy was the grossest blast I’ve ever had,” Hill wrote of the role earlier this year. “I thought, what if Fyre Festival was a person and that person had power in the White House.” As the new Don’t Look Up trailer reveals, the higher-ups aren’t the only ones who dismiss the space-based threat, as Mindy and Dibiasky embark on a publicity tour and are generally mocked by everyone they encounter. “Kate Dibiasky and Dr. Randall Mindy make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system,” an official synopsis explains. “The problem — it’s on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate.” “With only six months until the comet makes impact, managing the 24-hour news cycle and gaining the attention of the social media obsessed public before it’s too late proves shockingly comical — what will it take to get the world to just look up?!” Right now, this ‘satire’ is sounding a bit too close to home, tbh.
