In the dramatisation of the true crime story, Kate McKinnon will portray the infamous Carole Baskin, the founder of Big Cat Rescue, (alleged) husband killer, and nemesis of Joe Exotic, who lends his name to the show. Twin Peaks’ Kyle MacLachlan, meanwhile, plays her current husband, Howard Baskin. Photos from the set — shared by a Kate McKinnon fan page — show the pair in what appears to be full costume, with McKinnon in a leopard and floral-printed top (what else?). MacLachlan’s Howard wears tan trousers with a mobile phone holder attached at the belt (the king of wild style he is, sadly, not). John Cameron Mitchell is also set to star in Joe Exotic, as the titular character, alongside Nat Wolff, Sam Keeley, and Brian Van Holt. In case you missed out on the whole Tiger King phenomenon the first time around, the producers of the miniseries sum the story up in a handy synopsis: “Joe Exotic is a limited series based on true events following Carole Baskin (McKinnon), a big cat enthusiast, who learns that fellow exotic animal lover Joe ‘Exotic’ Schreibvogel is breeding and using his big cats for profit.” “She sets out to shut down his venture, inciting a quickly escalating rivalry. But Carole has a checkered past of her own and when the claws come out, Joe will stop at nothing to expose what he sees as her hypocrisy. The results prove dangerous.” The original Netflix show is also set to receive a documentary sequel before the end of the year, with Tiger King 2 promising “more madness and mayhem”. As revealed in a teaser last month, both Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin will be making an appearance, with the former phoning in from behind bars.
