A first look at Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Pablo Larraín’s biopic

Slated to arrive in autumn 2021, Spencer will focus on a single weekend in Princess Diana’s life

A new image released from the set of Pablo Larraín’s upcoming Princess Diana biopic, Spencer, offers a first look at Kristen Stewart in the lead role as the film begins production.

Spencer revolves around a single weekend at the royal family’s Sandringham estate, as she arrives on the decision to end her marriage to Prince Charles. “December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold,” reads the official synopsis from Neon. “Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.”

Unsurprisingly, the photo features her gazing thoughtfully out of a window in stately surroundings. It also gives an idea of what to expect from Little Women costume designer Jacqueline Durran, with the young royal pictured in a black hat and veil, with a black bow at her neck. Besides the psychological dance drama Ema, Pablo Larraín has previously directed unconventional biopics on Jackie Kennedy and Pablo Neruda, making Spencer pretty familiar ground. Claire Mathon, the cinematographer behind sublime scenes in Atlantics and Portrait of a Lady on Fireis onboard as director of photography, while the script comes courtesy of screenwriter Steven Knight.

Last year, Stewart also spoke about her connection to Diana, saying that she remains “viscerally affected” by images of the princess’s funeral, which she watched as a child. “It’s one of the saddest stories to exist ever, and I don’t want to just play Diana – I want to know her implicitly,” she adds. “I haven’t been this excited about playing a part, by the way, in so long.”
