Luca Guadagnino is directing a Scarface remake written by the Coen brothers

The Call Me By Your Name director will take the classic gangster story to Los Angeles

Luca Guadagnino has been announced as the director of an upcoming Scarface remake, working with a script written by the Coen brothers, who have been attached to the project for at least three years.

The Suspiria and Call Me By Your Name director’s new take on the classic gangster story will see it shift from the OTT Miami of Brian De Palma’s 1983 version, to Los Angeles.

The Scarface narrative was also told in a 1932 film of the same name. Luca Guadagnino’s version will be “a reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films,” according to Variety.

It looks like Guadagnino has a busy few years ahead of him, as he recently found a writer for his Lord of the Flies adaptation as well, plus confirming a Call Me By Your Name sequel, with Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer reprising their roles as Elio and Oliver.

In a 2019 interview with Dazed, the Italian director reflects on Call Me By Your Name’s cult legacy, and says he “hadn’t thought of anybody else” to play the leads.
