The show will primarily follow Thunberg’s international travels as she raises awareness about the ecological emergency, encourages people to rise up, and puts pressure on world leaders to enact change. According to BBC Studios, the series will also chart the teenager’s “journey into adulthood as she continues to be confronted by the real world consequences of inaction”, as well as offering an insight into the writing process of her impassioned speeches. Executive producer Rob Liddell said in a press release: “Climate change is probably the most important issue of our lives, so it feels timely to make an authoritative series that explores the facts and science behind this complex subject. To be able to do this with Greta is an extraordinary privilege, getting an inside view on what it’s like being a global icon and one of the most famous faces on the planet.” Thunberg first became the face of the climate movement in 2018 when she started striking from school as a way to call on the Swedish government to take stronger action on the crisis. Since then, she has encouraged countless young people to join her weekly strikes, led the largest ever global climate strike, delivered a number of eloquent speeches, and been named TIME’s Person Of The Year. The teen also travelled from Europe to the US over the summer to attend the UN Climate Action Summit and the UN climate conference, sailing for two weeks via a zero emission boat powered by solar panels and underwater turbines. The BBC’s series isn’t the first to centre on Thunberg and her achievements – it was announced in December that Hulu is working on a documentary that will chronicle Thunberg’s rise to global prominence. There’s no news yet on when either documentary will air, though Hulu’s is set to premiere this year.
