A full trailer has landed for the new Charlie’s Angels film, set for release later in 2019 with an all-new cast starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska.
The action-comedy is the latest directorial offering from Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect 2) and the Angels’ first outing on the big screen since 2003’s Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, starring the inimitable trio Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu.
Fan’s reactions have been mixed given the cult status of the original 2000 Charlie’s Angels film adapted from Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts’ hit 70s TV show of the same name. Some expressed their bewilderment on Twitter with one user posting “Charlies angels trailer serving big random 2010 energy,” while others welcomed the franchise being brought to the attention of a new generation.
The synopsis from Sony Pictures reads: “Charlie’s Angels have always provided security and investigative skills to private clients, and now the Townsend Agency has expanded internationally with multiple teams of Angels guided by multiple Bosleys taking on the toughest jobs across the world. When a young systems engineer blows the whistle on a dangerous technology, these Angels are called into action, putting their lives on the line to protect us all.”
If the last decade of mainstream hollywood cinema has taught us anything, it’s that film franchises will continue to be re-booted and re-hashed until we’re all long gone. This year is no exception – Toy Story adds its fourth title this summer, there’s another Spiderman film out starring Tom Holland, and now Charlie’s Angels gets the 2019 treatment.
