American home video company Shout! Factory has teamed up with independent film distributors IFC Midnight for the limited edition release, which comprises of just 2,500 copies (get your orders in quick!) sold exclusively through the Shout! Factory website. The emergence of the Babadook as a queer icon can be traced back to 2016 tumblr posts jokingly referring to the shadowy creature as openly gay, sparking tongue-in-cheek “Babadiscourse” on the platform, where people ironically interpreted queer subtext in the film, citing the Babadook’s “dramatic persona, grotesque costume, and chaotic effect within a traditional family structure.” my new favorite Tumblr meme is insisting that The Babadook is gay pic.twitter.com/Id1PJpkkgX— Ryan Broderick (@broderick) February 15, 2017no cops at pride just the babadook warding off homophobes and transphobes— asamr (@samiamrosenberg) June 3, 2019 Shout! Factory said in a statement about the special edition release: “Thanks to the unpredictable world of social media, viral videos and passionate fans, The Babadook became an unexpected and embraced LGBTQ mascot in 2017 and even carried over into last year as well. This year, we fling the closet doors open even further to cement his status!” They added: “We’ve created a special release with participation from our fine partners at IFC Midnight: an official limited edition and numbered Pride Month-themed slipcover packaging that will be shrink-wrapped over our existing Blu-ray release. The slipcover has a gloss finish with embossed highlights.” Grab your copy of the limited pride-month edition of the Babadook here. Escape the algorithm!
