Take the Labubu for example: the riot-inducing toy has taken over the industry across the last few months, as likely to be hanging from a pre-schooler’s backpack as it is an Hermès Birkin on the front row of fashion week. The world is rough – might as well have a little fun with what we wear. That seems to be the mindset of Maje this season, too. Best known for its cool, clean, contemporary take on French girl fashion – think striped Breton tees, crisp shirts, soft, second-skin cardigans, and loads of fab indigo denim – the label has pulled a U-turn with an unexpected collaboration. This season, it’s linked up with Mattel’s Hot Wheels – yes, those little cars you or your kid brother were probably obsessed with when you were little – for a neat little capsule dedicated to the need for speed. The line-up consists of tight little baby tees plastered with nostalgic 90s graphics, the cars in question depicted emerging out of flames, which are also depicted across denim workers jackets and slouchy, easy-to-wear bombers. A pleated tennis skirt, strappy vest, and preppy cardigan are given a speedy makeover, while accessories in the form of embroidered dad caps and sleek racer-red patent slingbacks make up the best of the rest. Speed freaks, don’t sleep – the collab is available in strictly limited numbers, so put pedal to the metal before it’s gone. Click through the gallery above for a closer look.
