The red carpet is to fashion people what the actual award show is to cinephiles. While everyone waited to see if their Oscars predictions would come true, celebrities served us their Sunday best for Hollywood’s big night. With plenty of gothic feathers and Glinda-style dresses, the looks this year were polarised between princess-core and avian-chic. Even before the night began, this year’s Oscars have already been quite the conversation starter. We’ve seen hot take after hot take on whether Timothée Chalamet should take home an Oscar for Marty Supreme, after insulting ballet and opera this past week. Also, the news that the 98th Academy Awards will include the first new category to be added in 24 years, casting, has injected some much-needed excitement back into this year’s awards season grand finale. Many of our favourite stars are known for arriving on the red carpet fashionably late. Still, Dazed cover star Chase Infinity made her Oscars debut early in a custom lavender Louis Vuitton floor-length ruffle dress and a diamond De Beers London choker. Barbie Ferreira also arrived early, wearing a structured blue corset gown by Gap Studio (Zac Posen strikes again!) and platform Christian Louboutin pumps. Shortly after, Sinners’ breakout star Miles Caton walked the red carpet for the first time with his mum in a moment that could only be described as heartwarming. As the night went on, Demi Moore arrived in some peacock realness – a custom Gucci feathered number. Elle Fanning, who got her first-ever Academy Awards nomination for her role in Sentimental Value, wore an ethereal tulle princess Givenchy gown. Right before the red carpet closed, some more heavy-hitters arrived, like Teyana Taylor, who also got her first Oscar nod this year for her role in One Battle After Another. Pre-Oscars, Taylor had told Variety, “Oh, my God, it’s going to be good.” She wasn’t wrong: her feathered Chanel gown was nothing short of perfection.
