After months of rumours and speculation, a sequence of breaking fashion news stories over the past few days has left us with some questions answered and several new question marks. As Paris Fashion Week came to a close at the start of the week, Miu Miu delivered a star-studded catwalk featuring Sarah Paulson and Cortisa Star, whilst Saint Laurent ushered in the age of ‘Boom Boom’ fashion. The first of this week’s musical chair news landed on Monday (March 10), when it was announced that Simone Bellotti would be taking over at Jil Sander as creative director. Then, yesterday (March 13), Versace made the shock announcement that Donatella would be leaving her post as creative director. The peroxide blonde fashion icon has officially taken a step back from design duties, and instead, taken on the new role of chief brand ambassador of Versace. The news of Donatella’s departure also introduced us to her replacement, former Miu Miu design director Dario Vitale – who you can get to know here. But before we’d had a moment to mourn the loss of Donatella’s presence in fashion design, another announcement came crashing into inboxes. Balenciaga creative director Demna will be leaving his role in July and heading to Gucci. Following last month’s news that Sabato De Sarno would be leaving Gucci, all sorts of names had been predicted to replace him. None of the names, however, had been Demna’s, sending shockwaves and excitement through the industry. Of course, this leaves us with a new job opening to speculate: who will take over at Balenciaga? And will we have a chance to catch our breath before the knock-on effect of fashion’s musical chairs strikes again? Probably not. Between all of that, you’re bound to have missed a few of the smaller stories that broke this week.
