PETA – formally People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – is known for its disruptive stunts at various international fashion weeks, and London got a taste yesterday morning as a pair of protestors turned up to British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN show space at 180 The Strand. To highlight the fact that “Leather Is Someone’s Skin”, one of the activists screamed in pain while the other tore off her “skin” – which was actually a prosthetic made with special-effects make-up. “For leather bags, jackets, and shoes, sensitive cows are sentenced to a lifetime of suffering and a miserable death,” said PETA senior campaigns manager Kate Werner in a statement released after the action. “PETA is calling on the fashion community to reject this abusive industry and instead choose the many vegan textile options made from pineapple, apple, mushroom, or even cactus that are kind to animals and the planet.” In other fashion news this week, Ellen Hodakova Larsson won the 2024 LVMH Prize, so we revisited this interview with her from earlier in the year; Sarah Burton was announced as the new creative director of Givenchy, ending 12 months of speculation as to where she might end up; Martine Rose teamed up with Supreme for a brand new Fall collection; plus Chappell Roan won the VMAs red carpet in Y/Project and Rabanne. Over at New York Fashion Week, Wu-Tang Clan crashed the Tommy Hilfiger runway for an impromptu performance on the Staten Island ferry; Willy Chavarria declared himself the “new Chicano Ralph Lauren”; Madonna caused a meltdown at Luar’s SS25 show; and the room fell silent for Rihanna as she made her way into Alaïa’s latest show.
