(Unfortunately, we’re speaking from personal experience.) Curated by British journalist Charlie Porter, the show spans some of Mapplethorpe’s most striking fashion images, from lovers dressed in Castelbajac sweaters, to stills of lone Bottega Veneta purses, the weft and warp of woven leather explored in exacting black-and-white. Elsewhere, though, things take a more X-rated turn, as in the aptly-titled Cock and Jeans (1978), in which model Larry Lavorgna lies prone, titular jeans unbuttoned, with an unapologetic, perpendicular erection. (Again, sorry to the poor old lady who was just trying to enjoy her pain au chocolat.) The exhibition showcases these images alongside testimonials from collaborators, friends, and lovers, shedding light on Mapplethorpe’s use of clothing to frame the body and express desire, disdain, kinship and love. Catch it online, where it runs until until September 3. In other news you might have missed, Phoebe Philo finally teased her first eponymous collection, the Venn diagram of fashion and sport got a couple of big updates, courtesy of LVMH’s Olympics deal and a footie-mad Martine Rose x Nike collab, and Karoline Vitto set her sights on the Milan runway for SS24. Well, sort of. Created alongside curators Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen, Oliver’s new project The Mall of Anonymous is actually a complex “walk-in sculpture”, bringing together the three brands that Shayne Oliver Group is imminently launching: the high-end namesake label Shayne Oliver, the collaboration-based Anonymous Club, and As Seen by Shayne Oliver, a home for “elevated and twisted basics”. Photos, film, and IRL samples will all be on hand in the mall’s labyrinthine, liminal architecture, opening to shoppers this August.view more + 2/9 2/9 EVERYONE’S INVITED TO DIESEL’S SS24 SHOWGlenn Martens threw open the doors to 5,000 people – more than half of which were members of the public – for his Diesel arena show in 2022, and he’ll do it again. The label’s SS24 show is officially set to take place on September 20, with an online registration process opening September 1 via Diesel dot com. It’s unclear what kind of spectacle the designer has in store this time, but with a history of record-breaking inflatables and free condoms, you might want to make sure you’re signed up.view more + 3/9 3/9 PALACE JUMPS ON FASHION’S FOOTBALL FETISHIn case you haven’t noticed, the fashion world continues to be swamped with football paraphernalia – Depop girlies hawking vintage shirts, editors desperately trying to figure out the offside rule, etc, etc. Palace gets it, at least according to the brand’s Autumn 2023 lookbook, which comes replete with team crest-studded tracksuits and other pitchside lewks. Elsewhere, we get patchwork animal-print two-pieces and cobweb-lined hoodies, for those of us who would rather sit at home and gather dust than run around a muddy field for 90 minutes.view more + 4/9 4/9 GUCCI’S COSMOS IS COMING TO LONDONAt the ripe old age of 102, Gucci is getting nostalgic. Expect some of the house’s greatest hits, alongside never-before-seen pieces from the archives, spanning the respective reigns of Guccio Gucci, Tom Ford, Alessandro Michele, and more, set in a showspace designed by British artist Es Devlin.view more + 5/9 5/9 SAINT LAURENT MISSED THE BRITISH WEATHER FORECASTWith grey skies and endless drizzle over London, it’s hard not to take Saint Laurent’s new Rive Droite drop too personally. The exclusive selection of products designed by Anthony Vaccarello includes beach towels, sunglasses, speakers, surfboards and cameras, featuring collabs with the likes of Baccarat, and photography by Purienne. Basically, it’s the perfect assortment of items for a chic beach day. Which would be really, really lovely, if summer wasn’t ALREADY OVER.view more + 6/9 6/9 LUISAVIAROMA LINKS UP WITH VIVIENNE WESTWOODFirst unveiled at LuisaViaRoma’s big runway blowout back in June, the label’s collaboration with Vivienne Westwood – think: plaid corsets and kilts infused with the spirit of punk – is finally available as a capsule collection, both online and in flashship boutiques in the UK, Paris, Milan, New York, and LA. Keep an eye out for the platform-heeled throwbacks to Naomi Campbell toppling over at Westwood’s 1993 Anglomania show, coming to an ill-advised outfit near you.view more + 7/9 7/9 Courtesy of Louis VuittonBEYONCÉ CO-SIGNS PHARRELL WILLIAMS’ LOUIS VUITTONBeyoncé’s ongoing Renaissance world tour has spawned a variety of theatrical looks, each garment dutifully logged by dedicated Instagram accounts. As the tour hits Detroit, these accounts can add Pharrell Williams to the long list of designers tapped by the musician, who has thrown her weight behind his new-ish position as Louis Vuitton’s creative director, just a month after popping up at his debut show, wearing a custom bodysuit in a crystal-studded variant of the label’s signature Damier check.view more + 8/9 8/9 ROCKSTAR TAILOR EDWARD SEXTON DIES AGED 80If you don’t already know the name Edward Sexton, then you might well recognise his dandyish silhouettes from the wardrobes of Harry Styles or Jarvis Cocker. That said, the Savile Row tailor’s rockstar collaborations go back much further, with the likes of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and Elton John all wearing his designs at one time or another. That’s probably why, when he passed away aged 80 last weekend, tributes poured in calling him the coolest tailor in the world.view more + 9/9 9/9 Courtesy of Levi’sLEVI’S PAYS TRIBUTE TO STUDIO GHIBLI’S PRINCESS MONONOKEAt this point, a Studio Ghibli collab is a surefire way into our hearts (and wallets). The latest example sees Levi’s team up with the Japanese animation studio for a double-denim reimagining of Hayao Miyazaki’s acclaimed environmental epic Princess Mononoke, first released back in 1997. Inspired by the film’s intricate, hand-painted backdrops, the collection prints atmospheric landscapes and action scenes onto trucker jackets and jeans, with the story’s darker elements gracing a denim kimono.
