Having experience working with Calvin Klein and Clements Ribeiro, the Central St Martins MA graduate embraces artisan techniques, handcrafting each piece from unexpected materials. Tailoring and pad stitching sit beside blown glass and ceramics whilst soft Melton and horsehair is contrasted against the cold harshness of keys, pins, and wrapped chandelier crystals. Creating these sculptural epaulettes, Sidaway has attempted to exaggerate the shoulder through artificial construction, manipulation, and distortion.Dazed Digital: Do you consider your pieces jewellery or clothing? Or even art? Dean Sidaway: I like to think they can cross over, I wanted to ensure that the images were not shot on a fashion model so the viewer can interpret the pieces as they wish and view them as fashion or art depending on their perception. DD: What materials do you use? Dean Sidaway: Ceramics, glass, wood and also more traditional fabrics such as leather, tulle and melton wools. I try to bring different textures and materials into my work. but designing the pieces around the body is important.DD: What inspired this collection? Dean Sidaway: The idea of embellishing the body, clothing is an adornment or a decoration, working around the shoulder had been something I had considering for a while, then with the rise in popularity of this area of the body it was something I had to do now.DD: Are these all one-off designs? Dean Sidaway: Yes, I'm happy to work on special commissions or projects based around the ideas of this collection, but the designs are one-offs specific to the collection.DD: What do you want to do next? Dean Sidaway: Working on my next collection, I'm looking at the idea of 'Fragments', I also want to collaborate with creative people in other areas, whether that is in film, art or fashion.
