A new sculpture will feature in Virgil Abloh’s retrospective at ICA Boston

The sculpture is set to debut beside Abloh’s past works and collaborations, archival pieces from Off-White, and more

Virgil Abloh has repeatedly proved himself beyond the realm of fashion, exhibiting art, designing furniture for Ikea – accompanied by a surreal ad – and, as of last month, creating a poster for Rage Against the Machine’s reformation.

Cataloguing Abloh’s forays into the art world is the major retrospective, Figures of Speech, and Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art has announced that it will house the show beginning July 4.

The designer’s exhibition will be set in an “immersive space” designed by the acclaimed architecture firm OMA*AMO, which was founded by Rem Koolhaas, the architect credited with piquing Abloh’s interest in fashion.

Alongside collections and video from Abloh’s career at Off-White, and collaborations with Hood By Air, it will place works made with artists such as Takashi Murakami and Jenny Holzer. Abloh’s furniture will also feature, as will his graphic design work and a previously-unseen sculpture.

In other Virgil Abloh news, the designer made his return to fashion for AW20, after taking three months off on doctors’ orders. In his collection for Louis Vuitton, he doubled down on his claim that streetwear is at death’s door.

Figures of Speech has previously shown in Chicago and will run at the ICA Boston from July 4 to October 18.
